AMES, Iowa – The No. 19 Iowa State women's golf team earned its seventh-straight berth to the NCAA Regionals, announced this evening on the Golf Channel. The Cyclones were selected to play in the NCAA Shoal Creek Regional, May 5-7 in Shoal Creek, Alabama, as the No. 5 seed.
The NCAA Shoal Creek Regional will be held at Shoal Creek with Alabama as the host. The top six teams in the four regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-25 in Eugene, Oregon. The low three individuals in each regional not among the teams advancing will also punch a ticket to Eugene.
This marks the 11th time in school history (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) Iowa State has qualified for an NCAA Regional. In 2014, the Cyclones advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first and only time in school history, finishing 23rd at the national tournament.
Iowa State is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship this past weekend at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
It marked the seventh season in a row where the Cyclones placed fourth or better at the Big 12 Championship. Senior Cajsa Persson made the Big 12 All-Tournament team for the third time in her career.
It has been a season to remember for the Cyclones. Three Cyclones are currently ranked in the nation's top-150 and the team has placed in the top-five in seven out of its 10 tournaments. The squad tied the school record for low 54-hole score (857) at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate in the fall, and then shattered that mark by posting a school-record 849 at the Hurricane Invitational in the spring. Martens' deep roster features five Cyclones who have placed in the top-10 a total of 12 times this season.
Sophomore Celia Barquin is second on the team in stroke average at 73.27 and has three top-10 finishes. Barquin, who is ranked 98th nationally by Golfweek, barely missed making the NCAA Championship as an individual last year, falling a stroke shy while tying for ninth.
Freshman Chayanit Wangmahaporn is the other Cyclone ranked in the top-100 nationally at No. 57 in the latest Golfweek rankings. Wangmahaporn leads the team and is on pace to break ISU's season scoring record with a 72.73 stroke average.
Wangmahaporn also leads the team in top-10 finishes with four.
