DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State saw all three of its multi-event competitors pick up event personal bests on the opening day of the Drake Relays at Drake Stadium. In the women's heptathlon, Kaci Storm is tied for sixth with 2,893 points, and Emma Whigham sits ninth with 2,817 points. As for the men's decathlon, Wyatt Rhoads is ninth halfway through the competition with 3,130 points.
Storm, who ranks fifth in ISU history in the heptathlon, is 12 points ahead of her personal best pace which she set three weeks ago at the Jim Click Shootout. While Storm's lowest finish of the day came in the high jump, it also came with a personal best of 4-10 1/4. She just missed out on a pair of personal bests elsewhere, with her 25.69 in the 200-meter dash just .04 off her career-best time and 45-9 3/4 in the shot put an inch-and-a-half short of her previous best.
Whigham had some struggles on the rainy, cloudy day in Des Moines, but finished the day on a big note by finishing second in the 200-meter dash. The freshman ran her best wind-legal time of her career with a 24.55, a time that also sees her break into Iowa State's all-time top 10 for the event in ninth place.
Rhoads boosted his score up via a pair of strong performances in the running events, as his best finish of the day came via the fourth-fastest 400-meter dash time among the decathletes with a 51.13. Rhoads picked up a PR in the shot put, as his toss of 33-6 1/2 was over one-and-a-half feet further than his previous best shot put effort.

The Iowa State trio is back in action tomorrow at the Drake Relays. The decathlon resumes at 9:30 a.m., with the heptathlon starting up again at 10:30 a.m. Track action begins at 4 p.m., and continues into Thursday night with the Distance Carnival events.
