Brown Returns to Spotlight With Drake Relays Win
04.28.2016 | Track and Field
DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State was able to claim its first white flag of the weekend when Bethanie Brown dominated the final mile of the women's 5,000 to get the win Thursday night at Drake Stadium. Brown, who was appearing in just her second outdoor meet since 2014, picked up the victory in 16:25.19. Brown becomes Iowa State's third Cyclone to win the women's 5,000, and first to claim a white flag since Lisa Koll in 2008.
A cross country All-American in 2013, Brown has seen her Cyclone career hindered by injuries that saw her miss the majority of the 2014 cross country season, the 2015 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, the 2015 cross country season and the 2016 indoor track campaign. Brown was in the back half of the pack for the first half of 5K. With about 2,000 to go, Brown began to pick up her pace and make her move to the front of pack with 1,200 to go. At that point, it was all about Brown, as she delivered the fastest splits in final three laps, capping it off with a 74 second final quarter.
Wyatt Rhoads was able to enjoy a couple of highlights en route to finishing fifth in the decathlon with 6,109 points. The freshman got a personal best in the pole vault, as his mark of 11-9 3/4 was eight inches higher than his previous best from earlier this season. Closing out the day in the 1,500-meter run, Rhoads demonstrated his abilities in the running events, finishing first among the decathletes in 4:36.96.
Emma Whigham finished her second career heptathlon with a sixth-place effort at 4,753 points. Whigham was strong in the javelin, with her 118-7 being within a couple of feet of her personal best. She finished the day strongly with a 2:23.63 in the 800-meter run. Kaci Storm was in position to be near her career-best score in the heptathlon, but was slowed by not scoring in the javelin, and ended up finishing 14th with 4,221 points.
A glimpse of the future for the Iowa State men was offered in the men's 10,000, as John Nownes and Thomas Pollard both ran unattached. Pollard took 10th in 30:31.73, while Nownes clocked in at 30:52.30
