Iowa State Continues Competition at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State got some strong performances in the field, and on the track to highlight the third day of the Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. ISU got four top-six efforts on the day, with a relay making its way high up Iowa State's records list.
A week after a pair of outstanding performances at LSU, Jhoanmy Luque was at it again at the Drake Relays in the women's long jump competition. Luque quickly put herself into the overall lead with her first leap going 20-3, and then improved to 20-3 1/2 on her second jump. The Venezuelan was in charge until the final jump of the day, when Purdue's Savannah Carson passed her in the sixth round at 20-8 1/2. Luque gave her best, but was adjudged to have fouled, and had to settle for second.
Christina Hillman readied for her competition in the shot put tomorrow with a fifth-place effort in the discus. Her best throw came on her second toss, which came in at a season-best 163-10. Also in the field, Alexandru Mitirica took sixth in the men's triple jump, with the Romanian's best effort being a leap of 50-6 1/4.
On the track, the Iowa State 4x800-meter relay team featured three freshmen in Jackie Feist, Jasmine Staebler and Erinn Stenman-Fahey and a sophomore in Evelyne Guay. The quartet finished sixth on the evening with a time of 8:43.13, the second-fastest relay in program history. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Taylor Sanderson just missed out on a personal best in prelims as he clocked in at 14.67.
