Jones, Luque Secure Bids to NCAA Championships
05.27.2016 | Track and Field
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State added two track and field student-athletes to its travel party for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in two weeks during competition Friday at the NCAA West Preliminaries. Jhoanmy Luque will be at the NCAA Championships in the women's long jump for the second-straight season with a best-leap of 20-5, while Derek Jones earned his first trip to Eugene, Oregon in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 51.51.
With one day to go Iowa State now has three competitors penned in for the NCAA Championships in a fortnight, as Jones and Luque join decathlete Taylor Sanderson.
Jones had a solid run in his men's 400-meter hurdles heat, bouncing back from a slow start with a big finish to take third in his heat in 51.51. The junior had to play the waiting game, as he was fifth among the at-large qualifiers with six advancing to Eugene and two heats to go. The fifth heat was a slow heat, as no one moved past the Cyclone. However, the sixth heat was a fast one, but Jones was able to hang on by 0.11 seconds to secure his first career NCAA Outdoor Championships bid.
Luque took care of business to ensure her spot in Eugene in the women's long jump for the second-straight season. Competing indoors due to another treacherous weather day in Lawrence, the Venezuelan got off to a rough start with a first jump of 19-0 1/2. The sophomore moved her way into the top-12 on her second jump of 19-11 3/4. Though that would have been enough, Luque left nothing to doubt as her final jump of 20-5 to move into fifth place.
Jalen Ford marked the final competition of his sophomore season with a personal best as Ford finished tied for 14th in the high jump at 6-11 1/2. Moved indoors due to the weather outside, Ford overcame an early miss at the first height, 6-7 1/2, to get back-to-back first clearances. He was one of 24 to make it to 7-1, but was unable to continue. Ford's effort moves him into a tie for 10th in ISU history in the high jump.
Brandon Wheat was unable to earn advancement to Eugene, but was able to finish his Iowa State career on a strong note. The senior recorded a personal-best 1:49.51 en route to taking fourth in heat four of the men's 800-meter run. The mark, over four-tenths of a second better than his previous best of 1:49.98 set earlier this season, also moved him to 10th in Iowa State history in the event.
