EUGENE, Oregon – The men kicked off the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday at Hayward Field for Iowa State. After five events in the decathlon, Taylor Sanderson is in 16th place with 3,803 points, and Derek Jones earned honorable mention All-America honors after finishing 17th in the 400-meter hurdles.
Sanderson got off to a great start to his decathlon, tying his wind-legal personal best in the 100-meter dash at 11.09. He was then solid in his next two events finishing the long jump at 23-0 1/2 and the shot put at 43-5 3/4, positioning himself into 14th place heading into the high jump. However, it was a rough day in the high jump pits, as Sanderson was only able to get a clearance at 6-0. The height was 21st among the decathlon competitors and dropped him three spots to 17th place after four events.
Closing out the evening with the 400-meter dash, Sanderson was able to bounce back with a solid performance. On the back of a strong, start, Sanderson crossed the line in 50.12 to earn himself 809 points and
Derek Jones wrapped up his outdoor track and field season with his first career All-America honor after his 17th place finish in 52.27 earned him Honorable Mention All-America. Jones was in the inside lane in heat one, and finished in seventh. However, his dedication to keeping up with the fastest heat in the competition was rewarded by a pair of slower heats that saw him able to stay up in 17th.
Jones is the second Cyclone to earn All-American honors in the 400-meter hurdles, joining three-time NCAA Champion Danny Harris.
