EUGENE, Oregon – The Iowa State women's track and field team got three team points as Christina Hillman finished sixth in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Hillman earned her seventh career First Team All-America honor at Haward Field on Thursday evening.
The Cyclones also saw Jhoanmy Luque and Taylor Sanderson earn Second Team All-America honors on the day. Luque finished 11th in the women's long jump, while Sanderson took 15th place in the decathlon.
The first thrower in the second flight, Hillman wasted zero time getting herself atop the leaderboard as she posted a first toss of 55-7 3/4 to lead after one round. She upped her best toss again on throw number two to get up to 56-4 3/4. The competition heated up to send the redshirt senior to fourth after the first three throws. Hillman was able to improve on her fourth and sixth throws, getting up to 57-4 1/4, but fell to sixth place as the competition continued to improve, which included Ole Miss' Raven Saunders setting the collegiate shot put record at 63-5.
Hillman's sixth-place finish earned her a seventh career First Team All-America honor. Hillman is the fourth Cyclone to earn seven first team All-America honors, joining Edith Nakiyingi (seven), Lisa Koll (eight) and Betsy Saina (nine). The Dover, Delaware native finishes her ISU career with seven All-America honors, three Big 12 titles and two NCAA championships in competition, and four Academic All-Big 12 honors and a First Team Academic All-America honor in the classroom.
Luque was the first competitor to make some noise in the women's long jump competition, as she first jumper to go she posted a leap of 20-3 3/4, which was good enough to have her in the lead after one effort. The Venezuelan made a small improvement on her second leap to 20-4 1/4, but the competition was stepping up as she slipped to fourth heading to the final jumps. Luque fouled on her final jump, and had to wait for the other 23 competitors to see if she would stay alive in the top-nine.
However, it was not her day, as she fell to her final resting spot of 11th place, which is still the highest finish of her NCAA career. It also gave her second team All-America honors, the third of her career with a chance to pick up a fourth in the triple jump on Saturday.
The name of the game for Taylor Sanderson on day two of the decathlon was consistency. He kicked off the day with a pair of good placings, earning ninth in the 110m hurdles in 14.75, and 10th in the discus at 133-10. A month after almost getting knocked out of the Big 12 Championships in the pole vault, Sanderson bounced back by tying his career best in the event at 13-9 1/4. Sanderson finished the meet on a very strong note with a 4:35.45 to secure his 15th place effort and earn Second Team All-America honors.
Sanderson, who earned Honorable Mention All-America in the decathlon at least season's NCAA Outdoor Championships, is the first two-time All-American in the decathlon in Iowa State history.
