AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Samantha Budai is set to participate in the Bush's $50,000 Waco Showdown Wildcard event at the Hurd Tennis Center Friday through Sunday on the campus of Baylor University, while a trio of Cyclones will participate at the Drake Invitational.
Budai will compete in the 10-player single elimination tournament, with hopes of advancing through and earning a spot in Bush's $50,000 Waco Showdown, which will be held Nov. 6-13, as an amateur.
Budai opens play against junior player Jessica Aragon on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Should Budai advance she would face Baylor's Theresa van Zyl.
Budai, a London, Ontario, native, enters her final season seventh in school history in overall career wins with 110. She went 16-15 in singles play last season, her second playing the top spot for the Cyclones.
Representing the Cyclones at Drake will be returnee Liera Bender and newcomers Erin Freeman and Karen Alvarez.
The tournament will start with doubles action as Bender and Freeman will square off against North Dakota's Alysse Nakasato and Alex Revenig at 10 a.m. Bender opens Flight B singles play against Northern Iowa's Liera Bender at 12:30 p.m. Freeman will make her Cyclone debut at 2 p.m. against Creighton's Claire Embree, while Alvarez plays at the same time against UNI's Sydney Wolfe.

Bender, an Urbandale, Iowa, native, returns for her sophomore season after going 7-13 last season. Freeman is a sophomore transfer from Utah State, while Alvarez is a freshman for the Cyclones.
