IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field team picked up five event wins Friday on the first day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City. The Cyclone women picked up three wins at the UI Recreation Building, while the ISU men got a pair of wins.
There were also many strong individual performances, with three student-athletes putting up marks to move into an all-time top-10 of an event.
After earning three All-America honors in 2016, the bar is set high again for Jhoanmy Luque, and the Venezuelan delivered in her season debut. Her third long jump of 20-5 3/4 gave her the lead, which she would not relinquish. However, she finished on a strong note on her final jump, despite having already locked up the win, by going with her winning jump of 20-6 1/2 on her sixth attempt.
Another Cyclone star making her season debut was Jasmine Staebler. The sophomore was also victorious on the day, taking the women's 600-meter Premier in 1:31.78.
Megan Schott has shown strong improvement so far in her sophomore season, and did so again on Friday as she went wire-to-wire to win the women's 3,000-meters in 9:59.23. She dropped nine seconds off her time from last weekend's Hawkeye Invitational.
The women's pentathlon got the multi-events season underway. The Cyclones were led by a true freshman, Aleenah Marcucci, in her first career multi-events contest. Marcucci started her day with a win in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing in 8.81, to set the foundation for a second place finish with 3,512 points. Her point total moves her into seventh-place in ISU history in the indoor pentathlon.
On the men's side, Dan Curts won for the second-straight week in the men's 1,000-meter run, crossing the line first in 2:26.84. In the field, freshman Cody Durbin got his first career event win in the men's high jump, clearing 6-6 3/4.
Jaymes Dennison impressed again in the men's 600-meter run Premier. A two-time junior college national champ at the distance, Dennison finished second in 1:16.84, with only American record holder Erik Sowinski finishing ahead of him.
Another impressive performance came in the men's 200-meter dash, with Eric Fogltanz finishing third in a personal best of 21.73. Fogltanz's time is the third-fastest by a Cyclone in the past 15 years, and ranks ninth in Iowa State history. Right behind him was Ben Kelly in 21.81, good for fourth.
