AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team is among a record-high number of teams named to the group of Fall 2016 Scholar All-America Teams by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA), the organization announced today.
The Cyclones have earned the recognition – which is given to teams with a collective GPA of 3.00 or higher – every year since 1990. During that streak, Iowa State swimmers and divers have earned individual recognition as Scholar All-Americans more than 50 times.
Iowa State worked its way to last semester's recognition by earning a team GPA of 3.44, one of the highest in head coach Duane Sorenson's 20-year tenure. Iowa State held the highest team GPA in the Big 12 and only 40 Division I programs across the country earned a higher mark than the Cyclones.
In total, 638 men's and women's teams across all divisions were recognized by the CSCAA. Of those 638 teams, 164 are Division I women's teams, placing Iowa State in the top-25 percent.
The Iowa State swimming and diving team returns to the pool this Saturday for the Cyclones' final home meet of the 2016-17 season. Iowa State will face off against Northern Iowa at 1 p.m. at Beyer Pool and will recognize its senior class for their contributions to the program 15 minutes prior to the start of the meet.
