AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Jhoanmy Luque has been named the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Friday afternoon. The award, coming after an outstanding performance by Luque at the Black and Gold Premier, is her first career weekly conference award.
Luque's win is the first by a Cyclone woman indoors since Betsy Saina picked one up in 2015. It is the fifth time the Cyclones have earned a Big 12 Indoor Female Athlete of the Week honor.
At the Black and Gold Premier on Saturday in Iowa City, Luque was the star of the show, with all six of her jumps being the six longest jumps of the competition. After her first three jumps, she was ahead with an indoor personal best of 42-5 1/4. Then she turned it up, tying her outdoor PR of 43-10 1/2 on her fourth jump and then posting her winning 44-6 1/4 on her fifth jump.
Her jump ranks her atop the Big 12 and at No. 2 in Division I during the 2017 indoor season. The three-time All-American also surpassed 44 feet for the first time in the triple jump, either indoors or outdoors.
Luque and the Cyclones return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska.
