LINCOLN, Nebraska – Iowa State's track and field teams finished off a good weekend at the Husker Invitational on Saturday. The action at the Bob Devaney Sports Center saw a dramatic victory for star triple jumper Jhoanmy Luque, some personal bests in the sprints and a strong effort in the high jump.
Luque was in third place of the women's triple jump competition at the halfway point with a best jump of 42-6 3/4. She moved her way into second with a leap of 42-11 on her fourth jump, and got as close as she could to the lead at 43-1 1/4, with Kentucky's Sha'Keela Saunders just ahead at 43-1 1/2. However, with Saunders passing on her sixth jump, Luque would get the final say. The Venezuelan delivered with a leap of 43-9 to secure her second triple jump competition win in as many weeks.
On the men's side, the men's 4x400 relay has been one of the stories of the season for ISU, and once again the quartet provided a strong performance. The order of Eric Fogltanz, Roshon Roomes, Derek Jones and Jaymes Dennison crossed the line in third place in 3:08.32. The effort moves the quartet up to No. 4 in ISU history in the indoor 4x400, and puts the Cyclones at No. 14 in the NCAA this season at the time of publication.
Fogltanz also had a strong day in the men's 200-meter dash competition, recording a personal best time of 21.67. The sophomore, who previously ran a 21.73 in the 200 a fortnight ago in Iowa City, moves up to a tie for seventh in ISU history in the event. Trever Ryen also got a PR in the 200 on the day, crossing in 21.90.
Jalen Ford enjoyed a nice day in the men's high jump competition, as he finished in a tie for third with an indoor-best leap of 6-10 3/4. The junior was on the verge of getting knocked out at his height, but he delivered on his third attempt. He had three shots at 7-0 1/2, but was unable to successfully clear it. Ford's previous best in the indoor high jump was 6-9 1/2 last season.
