Cyclones Shutout IUPUI In Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Iowa State (12-15) defeated IUPUI (6-17) in shutout fashion, 2-0, on Thursday in the opening game of FGCU's Battle at the Beach. Cyclone junior Brianna Weilbacher went all seven innings, giving up no runs on three hits, to go with 11 strikeouts.

Freshman Talyn Lewis sparked the offense for Iowa State, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, a double and a solo home run.

The Cyclones threatened on offense in their first two chances, leaving runners stranded at third in both the first and second inning, before breaking through in the top of the third frame. Kelsey McFarland and Sami Williams got things started with back-to-back base hits, including a double to right center by Williams. Lewis then came up with an RBI single through the left side to score McFarland and give ISU a 1-0 lead.

Weilbacher and the Cyclone defense held the Jaguar offensive attack in check through most of the game, and came up with timely plays when needed. IUPUI put forth its most serious threat in the home half of the sixth inning, putting runners on the corners on a base hit and an Iowa State error. However, Weilbacher rang up a pair of Jaguar batters in the inning and got a pop-up to get out of the jam.

Lewis punctuated the Cyclone win in the top of the seventh, notching her third hit of the day on a solo home run. The shot, which gave Iowa State a 2-0 lead, was the freshman's team-best fifth dinger of the season.
