IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field program racked up a combined 21 personal bests Saturday at the Musco Twilight in Iowa City and the Cardinal Classic at Stanford. Along with the collection of top times, the Cyclones also saw some changes to the all-time top 10 lists and a couple of student-athletes clinch berths to the NCAA West Preliminaries next month.
Musco Twilight
Iowa State had an outstanding day in the women's long jump, with Jhoanmy Luque's clutch sixth jump of 20-6 1/2 giving her the win, along with breaking the meet and facility record. Allanah McCorkle was close behind in third place at 20-0 1/4, while Emma Whigham jumped to a personal best 18-7 1/4 to finish in sixth.
Luque continued her strong day in the 100-meter dash, as she ran to a personal best of 12.08, ranking eighth in Iowa State history. McCorkle also ran to a personal best of 12.18, putting her 10th in ISU history.
Iowa State sent a large contingent of 1,500-meter runners to Iowa City, and the group produced some outstanding results. Grace Gibbons led the group with a second-place effort in 4:26.05, while Gwynne Wright took third in 4:27.08, both doing so in personal best times.
In the field, Christabel Okeke finished second in the women's hammer throw with a personal best throw of 181-10, over 12 feet further than her previous best. Okeke's effort put her 10th in Iowa State history in the event. Bailey Righi won the women's javelin with a career-best throw of 135-3, improving on her No. 6 ranking in school history.
Cardinal Classic
Dan Curts ran a personal best of 3:43.67 to finish sixth in Section 1 of the men's 1,500-meter run. Curts went a personal best in the 1,500 for a second-straight week after going 3:44.10 at the Bryan Clay Invitational last weekend. Needing to drop only a couple tenths to ensure his spot at the NCAA West Prelims next month, Curts delivered in a fast race.
On the women's side, Evelyne Guay finished seventh in Section 1 with a 4:23.89. In Section 4, Erinn Stenman-Fahey ran away from the competition to win the heat in 4:27.77, a PR of almost six seconds.
