Cyclones Runner-Up At Big 12 Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Iowa State women's golf team rallied on the final day of the Big 12 Championships, firing a final-round 292 to finish runner-up in the team standings.
The Cyclones, who had the lowest round of the afternoon, ended the tournament with an 892 total, seven strokes behind champion Texas (895). It's the highest placing for the Cyclones in Big 12 Championship history and the best finish in a league tournament since winning the 1993 Big Eight Championship.
ISU has finished in the upper-half of the Big 12 Championship eight seasons in a row.
It was a group effort for the Cyclones this afternoon. True freshman Amelia Grohn got the Cyclones rolling with a 69, the second-lowest score of the day. Chayanit Wangmahaporn added a 72 and Celia Barquin posted a 73 to aid the Cyclone final-round rally.
Both Wangmahaporn and Barquin made the All-Tournament team by placing in the top-10. Wangmahaporn finished tied for third at 219 and Barquin tied for ninth at 222.
Wangmahaporn's third-place finish is the second-best individual showing by a Cyclone in Big 12 Championship history. Punpaka Phuntumabamrung was the runner-up medalist at the 2013 Big 12 Championship.
Barquin eagled the final hole to help her finish 3-under in the final six holes.
Grohn's 69 this afternoon tied her career low 18-hole round. She had five birdies and just two bogeys en route to her 3-under score. She finished tied for 17th individually at 225.
ISU, which defeated three top-25 teams this week (No. 17 Oklahoma State, No. 18 Baylor, No. 23 Oklahoma), further solidified its resume for its eighth-straight NCAA Regional berth.
The NCAA will announce the regional qualifiers on Thursday, April 27.
