AMES, Iowa – Iowa State track and field great Bob Verbeeck will be inducted into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame this week. Verbeeck will become the 13th Cyclone to be inducted into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame.
At the Drake Relays, Verbeeck was a two-time champion in the University-College Division 1,500-meter run in 1982 and 1983, running a 3:42.88 in 1983. He also won a Drake Relays title anchoring the 4x1,600-meter relay team at the 1981 competition in a still-record time of 16:09.45.
Verbeeck was an NCAA Champion, two-time All-American and six-time Big Eight champion during his career at Iowa State (1981-85). The first man to run a sub-4:00 mile at an Iowa college, Verbeeck went on to represent Belgium at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and won the European indoor 3,000-meter run crown in 1985.
He is currently the CEO of Golazo, a sports marketing and management company based out of his native Belgium.
