DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field team saw Emma Whigham get a personal best score in the heptathlon Thursday at the Drake Relays. The ISU multi-eventers concluded their competition, while the track action got underway with the Distance Carnival.
In the heptathlon, Emma Whigham put herself in good position to set another career-high score in the events after a 17-7 1/2 in the long jump and a 114-4 in the javelin. All she needed to do was go a 2:16-low to get a new career-best heptathlon score, but she did more than that as she ran away with the fastest time in the 800 at 2:14.49.
Whigham's 5,200 points is 25 points better than her previous career-high effort at the Jim Click Shootout earlier this month. Her sixth-career heptathlon as a Cyclone, Whigham has improved on her career-best score on four of the five times she could.
While Wyatt Rhoads did not reach his career-best score in the Decathlon, he still posted a strong final day. Highlights of the day's events included tying a personal best in the pole vault with a 13-1 1/2 clearance, and finishing the day in the 1,500-meter run with a personal best 4:27.59 to win the event. Overall, the sophomore took sixth place with a score of 6,471 points.
Bethanie Brown was in last place of the women's 5,000 after the first lap, but had a very strong final mile of the race to move herself back up to a 12th place finish in 16:26.72.
In the men's 10,000, Sam Clausnitzer kept to himself near the back of the pack for the first half of the race, being as low as 21st place in the early laps. However, he slowly picked up the pace and kept improving on his splits each lap and picking off other runners. The freshman eventually crossed the line in 12th place in 30:38.52 in his collegiate 10,000-meters debut.
