AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head swimming and diving coach Duane Sorenson announced swimmer Anna Andersen will enroll at Iowa State and swim for the Cyclones next season. Andersen – who will be a sophomore next season – will transfer to the Cyclones from North Dakota, which recently cut its swimming and diving program.
An Albert Lea, Minnesota, native, Andersen comes to Ames with a pair of 2017 WAC championships in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Her season-best times posted in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke would have placed her in the top 15 on Iowa State's all-time top performers list.
During her high school years, she was named as an All-American, claiming one individual and two relay state championships. She swam for Albert Lea High School under Jon Schmitz, and the South Metro Storm with coaches Phil and Chuck Smith.
"She's going to really fill the whole that we're losing with Savanna [Townsend], Maddie [Rastall] and Brooke [Evensen] in the freestyle races. She's coming with outstanding times and a lot of experience swimming at a championship level," Sorenson said. "She's going to add tremendous depth in the 50 freestyle and could end up being our fastest 100 freestyler if you look at what she did last year. She's going to be the missing piece that we need in sprint freestyle events."
Andersen is the ninth newcomer the Cyclones will add to the roster in the 2017-18 season joining last fall's group of signees and the four additions announced earlier this month.
