LINCOLN, Nebraska – Iowa State earned three wins Saturday at the Nebraska Invitational. The Cyclones' victories all came on the men's side, with the 4x100-meter relay, Greyson Dolezal in the 3,000-meter run and Chris Celona in the hammer throw.
The Cyclones put up a strong effort in the 4x100-meter relay, ISU brought home the win in 40.72. Despite having to replace Jomal Wiltz, who is pursuing his NFL career, the quartet of Orion Salters, Ben Kelly, Elijah Young and Tever Ryen combining for the victory and season-best time. Kelly and Ryen went on to finish second (21.60) and third (21.77), respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
It was an ISU 1-2 in the men's 3,000-meter run, with Greyson Dolezal edging out teammate John Nownes for the victory. Dolezal crossed the line in 8:32.62, while Nownes finished in 8:33.02.
Derek Jones has had a tough season, with today only being the 2016 All-American's third appearance. However, he was able to make his postseason fate a little more secure with a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles of 51.87. The ISU senior and now ISU graduate ranked No. 33 in the West Region in the event at the time of publication.
In the men's hammer throw, Chris Celona earned his second victory in as many weeks with a winning-throw of 184-1. Celona finished the competition with five of the six furthest throws on the afternoon. His ISU teammate Brett Peters was third with a throw of 170-6.
The Cyclone women's hammer throwers had a strong day, taking three of the top-five slots. Ariana Kuhn had one of the best series of her career, finishing third with a best toss of 194-8. She had three throws over 190 feet on the day. Christabel Okeke bounced back from a challenging first three throws, to finish fourth at 178-4. Tessa Krempel set a new PR with her fifth throw of 171-1 giving her fifth place.
