02.01.2018 | Swimming and Diving
AMES, Iowa – The Cyclone swimming and diving team (4-4, 1-1 Big 12) is set to play host to Big 12 opponent Kansas (5-2, 1-0 Big 12) during a two-day meet on Feb. 2-3. Day one kicks off at 6 p.m. with platform diving at 5 p.m. Day two will start at 10 a.m., with three-meter diving prelims starting at 9 a.m.
LAST TIME – West Virginia/Villanova
The Cyclones came up just shy of their second Big 12 win of the year, dropping a close meet to the Mountaineers by a score of 160-140. Although they did not secure a victory, Iowa State did swim well and competed until the final relay. Sydney Ronald came home with a big win on the three-meter, while Kasey Roberts and Danica Delaquis gave the team a lot of momentum after finishing first and second in the 100 breast. Mary Kate Luddy provided a nice spark as well, taking the second spot in both butterfly events.
THE OPPONENT – Kansas Jayhawks
Iowa State checks in at 5-28 all-time against Kansas, last beating the Big 12 school in 2013-14. The Cyclones have already had a look at the Jayhawks at the Kansas Classic earlier this season. Kansas would win the event, scoring 1,066 points total. In dual meets this season, Kansas has a pair of wins against TCU and Nebraska. The Jayhawks also took down South Dakota, but dropped meets against Missouri State and Arkansas.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Butterfly
Mary Kate Luddy has led the way for the Cyclones in the butterfly events, currently sitting on top of Iowa State's leaderboard in the two events. Behind her, the swimmers are stacked up with underclassmen. Rachel Resch, Grace Snyder and Kennedy Tranel all have been excellent additions to the Cyclones' butterfly squad, while Kami Pankratz and Harper Emswiler have both cracked this season's top-five. Against a tough Kansas butterfly team, the Cyclones will need a solid performance front-to-back from their fliers.
UP NEXT – 2018 Big 12 Championships
The Cyclones will have some time off prior to the conference meet, which takes place from Feb. 21-24 in Austin, Texas. Texas is also hosting a Last Chance Meet on Feb. 25. The Cyclones have placed in the top-three at the Big 12 Championships in each of the last four years.
