Five Cyclones Named Academic All-Big 12

IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced today that five Iowa State wrestlers earned Academic All-Big 12 honors. Redshirt sophomores Brady Jennings, Chase Straw and Hank Swalla, and redshirt senior Colin Strickland all earned first-team recognition. Redshirt freshman Ian Parker was a second-team honoree.
To be eligible for first-team accolades, athletes must meet the minimum threshold of competitions, while maintaining a GPA of 3.2 or better. Second team members maintained a GPA of 3.00-3.19, while competing in the minimum number of competitions.
The Cyclones' four first-teamers is the most first team selections since 2005. It's also the most overall selections for ISU since 2012, and the second most since the Big 12 became a conference in 1997.
Swalla, who majors in Kineseology and Health, and Strickland, a graduate student in Political Science, were two of just three wrestlers on the Academic All-Big 12 list to achieve a 4.0 GPA.
Iowa State is set for action at the Big 12 Championship this weekend. Wrestling begins on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. You can catch every match from sessions 1-3 on FloWrestling. The finals (session four) will be broadcast on the Fox Sports family of networks.
