IRVING, Texas – Cyclone swimmer Mary Kate Luddy has been named the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week for the weeks of Jan. 22 through Feb. 5. Luddy is the second Cyclone to earn Big 12 honors this season, as Dana Liva took home Big 12 Diver of the Week earlier this year. This marks Luddy's first Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award of her career.
Luddy's outstanding performance in the butterfly events and relays in last weekend's dual against Kansas, as well as the double-dual with West Virginia and Villanova earned her the award. In the double-dual, Luddy was runner-up in both of the butterfly events with a time of 56.91 in the 100 fly and 2:05.16 in the 200. Against Kansas, she captured the top slot in those same events, with a 55.95 in the 100, and her time of 2:02.76 in the 200 was her personal best without a technical suit.
"I'm very happy for Mary Kate winning this honor," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "She is having a year so far and is a tremendous competitor every time she dives into the water."
Luddy was recognized on senior day last weekend, having three All-Big 12 recognitions and a school record to her name thus far. The Iowa State swimming and diving team will be back in action on Feb. 21 with the start of the 2018 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas.
