LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Iowa State tennis team (8-6) dropped a 4-3 decision to Wyoming (6-5) Sunday afternoon at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
The Cyclones took the doubles point to gain the early advantage, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola easily dispatched their opponents Tessa van Der Ploeg and Elisa Koonik, 6-1, at the top spot after Wyoming had won at No. 2 doubles. At the decisive third doubles position, Karen Alvarez and Annabella Bonadonna won 6-2 to give the Cyclones the important doubles point.
Cancini registered a huge win at No. 1 singles, defeating three-time All-Mountain West Conference selection Magdalena Stencel, 6-3, 6-3, at the top spot to put ISU up 2-0.
But the Cowgirls would win at No. 2-4 to go on top 3-2 in the match and leaving it up to the fifth and sixth spots in the lineup.
Alvarez took care of business at the No. 6 spot, beating Wyoming's Myiah Scott, 6-3, 6-2, to tie the team score at 3-3.
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, Bonadonna couldn't hold off the Cowgirls' Ana Tkachenko. Bonadonna won the opening set, 6-4, before dropping the last two 6-2 and 6-1. Tkachenko's win gave the Cowgirls the 4-3 win in the match.
