Kansas City, Mo. – The Iowa State tennis team (8-7) dropped its match to the UMKC Kangaroos, 5-2, on Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
Iowa State was able to secure the doubles point to begin the contest, with doubles partners Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola defeating Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. Duo Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna also secured a victory at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-2 over Aliona Ludutska and Grace Ball. Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Repina, who played at No. 3 doubles, went unfinished in their match against Katie Fries and Ioanna Lathouri, going 4-4, unfinished.
The Cyclones finished with only one point in singles action as Timakova took home a 6-3, 7-6 win against her foe from UMKC, Thanushree Vale. Cancini, the No. 1 singles player for the Cyclones, dropped her match to Ladutska, 7-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, Espindola's No. 2 match went into three sets. She was unable to grab a win, falling to Fries, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Erin Freeman, who played at the No. 3 singles position, also went into a three set match, but fell to Johnson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Ekaterina Repina fell 7-5, 6-3 to Grechkina, while Bonadonna dropped her match 6-1, 6-3 to Ball at the No. 4 and 6 singles spots respectively.
The Cyclones will open Big 12 action this Saturday as they face Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. in Stillwater, Oklahoma. After, ISU will meet with the Oklahoma Sooners at noon on Sunday to conclude its weekend on the road.
