ISU Defeats No. 11 Northwestern, Finishes Third At March Mayhem

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The Iowa State women's golf team knocked off No. 11 Northwestern, 3-2 to finish third in the Championship Bracket of the SDSU March Mayhem this afternoon.
The Cyclones, who were the third seed, went 2-1 in match play action during the week, defeating Colorado in the quarterfinals before falling to Texas in the semifinals.
USC was the team champion by defeating Texas in the championship match.
Senior Celia Barquin Arozamena came up big for the Cyclones today with a 3&1 victory over Hannah Kim, the No. 34-ranked player in the nation according to Golfweek. Barquin Arozamena was steady all round, carding just one bogey in 17 holes. A birdie on the eighth hole put her up two holes and she closed out the match on the 17th hole when Kim bogeyed.
Junior Chayanit Wangnahaporn won her match over Brooke Riley, 3&2. Wangmahporn never trailed in the match, setting the pace by winning the opening hole with a birdie. She was 3 Up after 12 holes and never looked back.
Amelia Grohn sealed the victory for the Cyclones with a 3&1 victory over Stephanie Lau. Like Wangmahaporn, she never trailed in the match. A birdie on the 13th hole put her in the driver's seat with a two-hole advantage with five holes remaining.
Iowa State is back in action at the Bruzzy's Challenge, April 2-3.
