IRVING, Texas – Iowa State senior Celia Barquin Arozamena and junior Chayanit Wangmahaporn were named to the All-Big 12 Team in women's golf, announced today by the Big 12 office.
The Cyclone duo made history with their latest honor, becoming the first two golfers in school history to make the All-Big 12 team three times: Barquin Arozamena (2015, 2016, 2018), Wangmahaporn (2016, 2017, 2018).
A native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, Barquin Arozamena has established herself as one of the greatest golfers in school history and further cemented her legacy by winning the 2018 Big 12 Championship.
Barquin Arozamena joined Shelley Finnestad (1993 Big Eight) as the only two Cyclones to win a conference tournament with a three-shot victory (73-71-69=213) at the Dallas Athletic Club over the weekend.
Ranked No. 69 nationally by Golfweek, Barquin Arozamena leads the team in stroke average (73.32) and top-10 finishes (5). Her career 73.47 stroke average ranks No. 1 in school history and her 16 top-10 finishes ties for second in the ISU career record book.
"Celia is a person who finds a way," Iowa State head coach Christie Martens said. "That's the best way to describe her. She's always ready for another challenge that comes her way, and she does a great job of leading her teammates to do the same. She won't allow excuses to get in the way of team accomplishments. She's a no-excuse person. When we ask her to do something, she does it and more. That's what we are really going to miss about her."
Wangmahaporn, a native of Rayong, Thailand, is currently ranked No. 74 in the Golfweek national rankings. The junior is second on the team in both stroke average (74.12) and top-10 finishes (4).
Wangmahaporn has the second-best career stroke average in school history at 73.54 and is the first Cyclone to earn All-Big 12 honors three-straight seasons.
"Kanoon (Chayanit) also has that mind-set where she wants to win and is super competitive," Martens said. "She wants to go out and beat people and her teammates definitely feed off that."
Iowa State will compete in the NCAA Madison Regional, May 7-9 in Madison, Wis.
