AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena made history on Sunday.
Down three strokes heading into the final round of the 2018 Big 12 Championship, Barquin Arozamena rallied with a final-round 69 (-3) to claim medalist honors in a three-shot victory. It was just the second time in the history of the program a Cyclone won a conference tournament (Shelley Finnestad, 1993 Big Eight).
Barquin Arozamena could not have picked a grander stage to claim her first collegiate victory. The Big 12 Conference boasts some of the best teams and golfers in the nation.
However, if you have followed Barquin Arozamena's four-year career at ISU closely, you should not be surprised. The Puente San Miguel, Spain native has established herself as one of the greatest golfers in the history of the program.
The Cyclone star, who currently ranks 69th nationally by Golfweek, leads the team in stroke average (73.32) and top-10 finishes (5). She almost got her first tournament win earlier in the year with a runner-up showing at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
"Celia is a person who finds a way," Iowa State head coach Christie Martens said. "That's the best way to describe her. She is always ready for another challenge that comes her way, and she does a great job of leading her teammates to do the same. She will not allow excuses to get in the way of team accomplishments. She is a no-excuse person. When we ask her to do something, she does it and more. That's what we are really going to miss about her."
You will find Barquin Arozamena's name all over the Iowa State career record book. She owns the best career stroke average in ISU history (73.47) and her 16 top-10 finishes ties for second all-time in the Cyclone annals. Her four season stroke average totals all rank in the top-9 on ISU's season lists as well.
A three-time All-Big 12 Team member, Barquin Arozamena has one more shot to reach her ultimate goal in playing in the NCAA Championships. The Cyclones earned their ninth-straight NCAA Regional bid, and Barquin Arozamena wants to prolong her Cyclone career deep into May at the NCAA Championships (May 18-23 in Stillwater, Okla.).
John Walters from Cyclones.tv recently sat down with Barquin Arozamena to reflect on her amazing accomplishments.
