ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Iowa State women's golf team advanced to the finals of the East and West Match Play with a 3-1-1 victory over Oregon State on Monday.
The Cyclone team decided to withdraw from the tournament upon receiving the news that one of the greatest players in school history, Celia Barquin Arozamena, lost her life on a golf course in a senseless act of violence. ISU was schedule to play UC Davis in the finals on Tuesday.
In the semifinal match, sophomore Alanna Campbell got the Cyclones on track with a decisive 5&3 victory over Susie Cavanagh. Two birdies in the first eight holes gave Campbell a commanding 5 Up advantage. Campbell had four birdies in 15 holes.
Amelia Grohn won her match, 4&3, over Nicole Schroeder. Grohn never trailed in the match after winning the second hole with a par. She was 1 Up through 11 holes, but increased her lead to 4 Up after 14 holes to take control of the match.
Joy Chou sealed the Cyclone victory with a 2&1 win over Olivia Benzin. A par on No. 15 gave Chou a 2 Up lead and she halved the final two holes to close the match.
