Semifinals
It was a tough round for the Cyclones in the semifinals. No. 2 Mackall fell to Purdue's No. 3 Devin Schroder by 6-2 decision, No. 3 Carr was bested by No. 2 Ryan Deakin of Northwestern, 8-3 and No. 2 Degen was forced to medical forfeit out of the tournament after suffering an injury yesterday.
125-Pound Fifth-Place Match
In the fifth-place bout, Mackall squared off against ASU's No. 6 Brandon Courtney. Mackall jumped out to a 2-0 lead with the first takedown of the match. Courtney reversed Mackall to tie the match at 2-2. Courtney quickly took Mackall back down after and escape and they went to the second period tied at 4-4.
In the second, Mackall began the period with a quick escape and then took Courtney down with just under a minute remaining in the period. Mackall rode Courtney out to finish the second and led 7-4.
Courtney cut Mackall's lead to 7-5 with an escape in the third, but couldn't come up with the necessary takedown to extend the match. With riding time, Mackall defeated Courtney by 8-5 decision to take fifth place at 125 pounds.
Consolation Round of Four / Consolation Semifinals
Small continued to stay hot on the backside of the 133-pound bracket. He rattled off another victory, securing a takedown in sudden victory to take out No. 7 Tim Rooney of Kent State by 6-4 decision. That win sent Small to the Consolation Semifinals. Small rolled on into the third-place match at 133 pounds with a 5-3 victory over Ohio State's Dylan Koontz.
At 141 pounds, Parker made posted a workmanlike 3-0 decision over Virginia Tech's No. 7 Mitch Moore to reach the Consolation Semifinals.
Parker got revenge in the Consolation Semifinals against Nebraska's No. 4 Chad Red. Parker took out the Cornhusker by 5-3 decision to advance to the third-place match.
After suffering a tough loss in the semifinals, Carr bounced back. He made light work of Fresno State's Jacob Wright, defeating the Bulldog by 9-0 major decision.
In the Consolation Round of Four, Gremmel tangled with conference foe, No. 6 Brian Andrews of Wyoming. Tied at 1-1 with time winding down in the third, Gremmel secured a takedown on the edge of the mat to win the match by 3-1 decision.
In the Consolation Semifinals, Gremmel pulled off some more late-match heroics. He notched two takedowns in the final 0:25 of the match to take out another top-15 opponent in Nebraska's No. 5 Christian Lance, defeating him by 5-2 decision.
Blood Round
Iowa State had five wrestlers competing in the round of 12 in Las Vegas on Saturday morning for a shot at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational podium to join semifinalists Mackall, Degen and Carr.
Small got things rolling for the Cyclones. He squared off against Virginia's Louie Hayes in the blood round. Small was on the attack and ousted the Cavalier by 10-5 decision.
It's no secret that Parker is tough in the top position, and he proved that once again against Cornell's Noah Baughman. Parker racked up over four minutes of riding time in an 8-0 major decision over Baughman.
Gremmel made it six Cyclones to earn top-eight finishes at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. He tallied three takedowns in an 8-6 win over Harvard's No. 12 Yaraslau Slavikouski.
No. 12 Marcus Coleman and No. 8 Sam Colbray both reached the round of 12, but fell short of reaching the medal stand.
