AMES, Iowa – For the first time in nearly four seasons, the Iowa State men's indoor track and field team have entered the USTFCCCA Division I Track & Field Rankings Index Top 25, the organization announced Monday afternoon. The Cyclones check in at No. 20 this week.
Iowa State's last entry into the USTFCCCA Indoor Track & Field Rankings came prior to the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships when the Cyclones were No. 24. That week, ISU went on to finish tied for ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Cyclones' return to the rankings has been an all-around effort across Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Martin Smith's men's program. The star has been Edwin Kurgat, with his school record 13:34.54 in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State Classic two weeks ago putting him No. 4 in the nation.
ISU's effort in the distance medley relay this past weekend at the JDL DMR Invitational pushed the Cyclones into the rankings. The quartet of Festus Lagat, Eric Fogltanz, Roshon Roomes and Dan Curts are ranked No. 6 in Division I this week following their time of 9:35.44.
At 3,000-meters, the Cyclones are the only program in the country to have four guys go under eight minutes at the distance this season. Three of those student-athletes are ranked in the top-25 at 3K in Andrew Jordan (10th, 7:51.29), Kurgat (19th, 7:53.71) and Curts (25th, 7:55.26).
Roomes and Lagat also contribute to ISU's ranking at 800 meters. Roomes checks in at No. 19 nationally with a time of 1:48.70, Lagat right behind him in 20th at 1:48.80.
In the field, Vlad Pavlenko's school record weight throw of 71-4 (21.74m) sees him ranked 13th. The senior team captain has seen his school record from last season's Big 12 Indoor Championships bettered by himself twice this year and is No. 2 in the conference for the weight throw this season.
In the hurdles, Logan Schneider's pair of 7.78s in the 60-meter hurdles this season see him ranked 18th nationally. He is just 0.02 seconds off of ISU's school record for the event and pushing his way into the top-16 nationally to make it to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
No. 20 Iowa State will be in action this weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Texas Tech. Competition will take place on Friday and Saturday in Lubbock.
