TEMPE, Arizona – Another win in the hammer throw for Vlad Pavlenko highlighted Iowa State's first day at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State. Pavlenko got the win in the hammer throw premiere, recording five of the six best throws in the competition, including his winning toss of 211-4 (64.42m).
Pavlenko picked up his second win in as many meets this season on Friday. His first throw of 199-7 (60.83m) had him in second after the first round, but he quickly moved his way into the lead in round two with a 206-6 (62.94m). The Cyclone senior recorded the two longest throws of the competition with his winning third round effort of 211-4 (64.42m) and a 208-8 (63.62m) in the fourth round. Pavlenko finished with five of the six biggest throws of the competition.
In the jumps, Jalaiya Bartley's weekend got off to a strong start in the women's long jump, as she finished fourth with a best effort of 17-9 1/2 (5.42m). She will use that momentum into her specialty event tomorrow, the triple jump. For the men, Chandler Diercks took fifth in the long jump with a best leap of 22-9 1/4 (6.94m).
On the track, in ISU's lone running event of the night Ben Kelly put up a strong performance in the men's 200-meter dash, as he finished fifth in 21.67.

Iowa State is back in action at the Sun Angel Classic tomorrow. For the Cyclones, competition will begin on the track with afternoon session running events beginning at 3 p.m. CDT. ISU's first field events will be at 5 p.m. Central, and the evening session of running events will start at 8 p.m. CDT.
