SACRAMENTO, California – Iowa State's track and field teams saw two of its own punch tickets to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday on day one of the NCAA West Preliminaries. Vlad Pavlenko made it in the men's hammer throw to start the day, while Amanda Vestri capped it off at night by qualifying in the women's 10,000-meter run.
The duo advances to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
Pavelnko was in the top-12 the whole way, as his first throw of 209-5 (63.84m) put him in seventh place. He uncorked his best toss of the day on his second attempt with a throw of 212-1 (64.64m), which saw him into eighth place heading into the final round. On his final try, Pavelnko had his shortest throw of the day at 206-9 (63.03m), but his late spot in the throw order meant there was little to sweat out as he came home in 10th place and with his spot in Austin.
Pavlenko will be making his first career trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and completes the season sweep after making it to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw.
In a deep and talented women's 10,000-meter run field, Vestri held her own with some of the nation's best, as she kept herself amongst the top-10 for the vast majority of the race. Though she did fade out of the top-10 in the final mile, her work in the first 8,000 meters ensured her a comfortable gap to 13th place, allowing her to secure the final women's 10K ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Iowa State saw all four of its First Round entries advance to the quarterfinals. Fesuts Lagat and Roshon Roomes both won their heats and both clocked in at under 1:50. Roomes ran the fastest time of the night, winning heat five in 1:48.59. Lagat won heat one in 1:49.82. Eric Fogltanz will run for his second-straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 hurdles tomorrow, with Fogltanz finishing the first round in 16th in 51.14.
For the Cyclone women, Erinn Stenman-Fahey extended her Cyclone career by another day, as she qualified for tomorrow night's 800-meter run quarterfinal via a third-place finish in her heat, clocking in at 2:06.15.
In the men's 10,000-meter run, David Too was able to stay with the lead pack for the first 6,000 meters of the competition before dropping off. The Cyclone sophomore came home in 26th in 29:42.04, wrapping up a busy campaign where he showed off his versatility across a variety of distances.
