CLE ELUM, Wash. – The Iowa State women's golf team staged a valiant effort in the final round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional this afternoon.
The Cyclones carded a 6-under 282 en route to the fourth-lowest round on the final 18 holes. ISU's card helped the Cyclones jump into 11th place on the final leaderboard at 882, falling eight strokes shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championship, May 17-22 at the Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville, Ark.
The top six teams advanced to the NCAA Championship, led by team champion USC at 844.
Heading into the final round the Cyclones were 12 strokes behind the sixth-place team in 12th place. ISU rallied, however, counting four scores at par or below this afternoon.
Leading the charge was Joy Chou and Chayanit Wangmahaporn, who posted scores of 69 and 70, respectively. Chou, who tied for 28th in the tournament at 220, had five birdies and two bogeys on her opening nine before registering all pars on the back nine.
Wangmahaporn also had five birdies today to finish the tournament in a tie for 28th at 220. The three-time All-Big 12 performer ends her brilliant career as one of the greatest players in Cyclone history. She posted 14 career top-10 finishes, tying for seventh in school history, and recorded the second-best career stroke average in the Cyclone annals at 73.59.
Junior Amelia Grohn was the team's top performer during the week, tying for 17th at 218 after posting a final-round 71. Her rounds of 75-72-71 left her five strokes shy from qualifying to the national meet as an individual.
This was ISU's school-record 10th-straight NCAA Regional appearance.
