AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team has announced the swimmers joining the 2020 signing class. Ranging from four states, the group offers specialty in a variety of strokes.
Maddie Ziegert has committed to join the team next fall as a transfer out of the University of Iowa. Originating from Granger, Indiana, Ziegert was named a six-time All-American while at Penn High School. Swimming for Jess Preston, Ziegert became an 11-time conference champion and a conference record holder in the 50 and 100 free in high school. As a sprint freestyler and backstroker, Ziegert claimed collegiate-bests of 23.27 (50 free), 51.74 (100 free) and 1:53.27 (200 free) at the Big Ten Championships as a freshman.
"Maddie is a tremendous sprint freestyler who will bring experience and competitiveness to the pool," assistant head coach Kelly Nordell said. "She will be a leader in the 50 and 100 freestyle events as well as relays. We are excited about her future as Cyclone."
Fallon DeWitt travels to Ames from Portland, Oregon specializing in the backstroke and IM. DeWitt qualified for the USA Swimming Futures Championships and the OSAA State Championships while at Grant High School. In her high school career, she has posted top times of 2:03.90 in the 200 back, 4:29.81 in the 400 IM, 57.61 in the 100 back and 2:08.42 in the 200 IM.
"Fallon is versatile and will be a force for us in both backstroke events as well as both the 200 IM and 400 IM," Nordell said. "She has an infectious, positive attitude, and in conjunction with her untapped potential, we think she has a bright future ahead."
Mallory Miller becomes a Cyclone as primarily an IMer and butterflyer. As a native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Miller became a two-time All-State and All-Conference honoree. Miller swam for coach Kelly Boston at Eden Prairie High School and for coach Lloyd Larsen with the Foxjets Swim Team. Miller also notched the status of becoming a finalist at the Minnesota Senior State Championships and the MSHSL Girls 2AA Sectional Championship.
"Mallory is driven to succeed and loves to be challenged," Nordell said. "She will be a great addition for us in the 200 fly, 400 IM and distance events. She is versatile and may also swim other events. Her club and high school coaches have prepared her well for collegiate athletics."
Carley Caughron joins Iowa State as a sprint freestyler and butterflyer out of Waterloo, Iowa. At Waterloo West High, Caughron has broken five school and two pool records. In addition, she has claimed the honors of becoming a MVC champion, district champion and the 2020 District Athlete of the Year. Caughron has also competed in the Iowa Senior Swimming Championship and the IGHSAU State Championship where she posted personal bests of 23.83 (50 free), 52.04 (100 free) and 56.55 (100 fly).
"Carley is one of the top sprinters in the state of Iowa," Nordell said. "She is very calm but when it comes to competing, she is fiery! Carley will have an immediate impact for us in the sprint freestyle events and sprint fly events. We see her as playing a big part on relays as well."
