How It Happened
After winning his consolation semi over No. 5 Cole Moody by 9-5 decision, sixth-seeded Straw then fell to SDSU's No. 4 Tanner Cook by pin. To determine a true fourth-place finisher, and determine who would get an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, Straw would take on No. 7 Adam Kemp of Fresno State.
Through the first period, it looked bleak for Straw. Kemp took Straw down three times in the first and led 6-3. Straw answered back in the third period, earning an escape and takedown to tie the match at 6-6. Kemp started the third with an escape, but Straw took him down to claim his first lead of the match at 8-7. Kemp sent the match to sudden victory on an escape, 8-8. In the extra period, Straw secured the winning take down, confirming his fourth-place finish and earning him a spot in the field at the NCAA Championships.
No. 4 Degen went 2-0 in Sunday morning's third session. In his first match of the day, Degen secured his second fall of the season over No. 6 Greg Gaxiola, pinning the Fresno State 149-pounder in 4:20. For third place, Degen squared up against No. 5 Andrew Alirez of UNC for the second time in the tournament. Just like the first meeting, it was Degen over Alirez by way of 5-3 decision.
Third-seeded Colbray also won his first match of the day in the consolation semifinals. He gritted out a match in sudden victory two, securing a takedown in the 10th minute of the match to move past No. 4 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley. In the third-place match, Colbray was forced to injury default in the first period against OSU's No. 5 Joe Smith.
No. 5 Coleman finished his tournament in style at 184 pounds. After falling in the consolation semifinals, Coleman was pitted against No. 7 Tate Samuelson in the fifth-place bout. Late in the second period, Coleman rolled through on a Samuelson shot and came out on top of the Cowboy, pinning him in 4:20.
