AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) topped UNI (0-1, 0-0 MVC) by a score of 212-86 on senior day. Divers had stand-out performances on both boards as Michelle Schlossmacher Smith (three-meter) and Jayna Misra (one-meter) both secured second-best performances in Iowa State history.
Schlossmacher Smith secured her sixth Zone-qualifying mark of the season with her personal-record score of 332.85 on the three-meter. The finish puts Schlossmacher Smith shy of the school record by a score of just 5.7. The current school-record holder, Tien Tran, has held the record of 338.55 since the 2008-09 season.
Misra solidified her new PR score of 320.55 on the one-meter and moves her Zone-qualifying season total to four. A score of 1.65 separates Misra from the school record. The record is currently held by Elyse Brouillette (322.20) and was set in the 2015-16 season.
"I was very excited about Michelle's performance on the three-meter," head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "Being second in school history against some really good divers in the past is just phenomenal. For Jayna today on one-meter to do the same and be close to that school record is pretty remarkable. They're really trying to work on being relaxed and let their good diving come out and I thought they did that today."
Iowa State touched with the top three times in the 200 medley relay to start off the dual. The team of Sophia Goushchina, Paige Hanley, Grace Snyder and Emma Sass placed first with 1:46.65. The team of Wyli Erlechman, Martha Haas, Emily Haan and Andie Quirke touched .1 second later to take second.
Brinley Horras took control of distance events as she outswam competitors in the 1000 free to grab her third career victory with 10:17.94. Keely Tierney touched next with 10:58.65. Horras came out on top again in the 500 free with her time of 5:02.76.
Freshman Ashley Bengtson and Sydney Jackson fired next in the 200 free to claim the top two times with 1:54.40 and 1:55.79. Kennedy Tranel touched third with 1:56.92 to secure first through third for the Cyclones.
In the 100 breaststroke, Martha Haas added another victory for Iowa State with 1:05.02. Lehr Thorson came right behind Haas with 1:07.46. The duo went on to take the top-two placements in the 200 breast, with Thorson coming out on top with 2:22.80 and Haas next with 2:22.91.
Lucia Rizzo extended her dominance in butterfly events as she took hold of both titles. Her time of 2:06.16 in the 200 fly and 57.92 in the 100 fly led all swimmers.
Senior day closed out with Iowa State topping the 400 free relay. Martha Haas, Kennedy Tranel, Ashley Bengtson and Sophia Goushchina combined for a time of 3:32.81.
"Being our first and last home dual meet of the season, we are very gracious of UNI to switch from their home meet to coming to Ames because it was our only chance to have senior day," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "I'm happy with the way a lot of our women swam smart races. Excited to see Emma Sass and Grace Snyder get their last swim at Beyer Hall in the 200 medley relay and win. Very pleased overall with the effort by everybody."
