AMES, Iowa. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) bested South Dakota State (1-2, 0-0 Summit) by a score of 158-78 Friday night. The Cyclones took 11 of 13 event titles while solidifying the top three times in six events.
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith highlighted the dual with two Zone-qualifying performances on the boards. On the one-meter, the senior totaled 268.87 for first. Schlossmacher Smith followed that up with another winning score of 280.88 on the three-meter to now hold 27 career Zone cuts.
The Cyclones grabbed the first three event titles to start the dual, including a sweep in the 1000 and 200 free. Brinley Horras (10:28.71), Keely Tierney (10:48.77) and Mallory Miller (10:55.17) punched out dominating distance times in the 1000 free. Lucia Rizzo (1:55.93), Sydney Jackson (1:56.83) and Trinity Gilbert (1:57.42) followed up with a sweep of their own in the 200 free.
Carley Caughron fought for 24.48 in the 50 free to grab second. The time clocked in just .44 seconds behind SDSU's Elisabeth Timmer.
In the 200 IM, Lehr Thorson took first with 2:11.54, as Fallon DeWitt (2:11.66) touched tenths of a second behind. Alaina Breitbach swam to 2:12.98 to secure first through third for Iowa State. Thorson's win goes down as the first 200 IM victory of her career.
The close finishes continued as Emily Haan (58.70), Trinity Gilbert (58.87) and Lucia Rizzo (58.89) posted top times in the 100 fly. The times not only all came in in less than a minute, but within .19 seconds of each other. Haan's victory is the second in a non-backstroke event of her career.
Another battle played out in the 100 free, where Maddie Ziegert touched after SDSU's Timmer for second with 54.19.
Ashley Bengtson (5:07.18, first) and Sydney Jackson (5:07.48, exh.) touched less than a second apart in the 500 free, with Winter Craig (5:17.88, exh.) following to claim the top three times.
Martha Haas swam to her second season victory, taking first in the 100 breast with 1:04.62. The Minnetonka, Minnesota native added 12 individual points to her name after breaking past 400 career points at the UNI dual to now hold 422.
On the one-meter, Jayna Misra (229.35), Lauren Kimball (220.88), Joscelyn Buss (220.43) and Jessica Coffin (180.83) dove in exhibition.
In three-meter diving, Buss took second behind Schlossmacher Smith with 257.18. Misra followed in fourth with 237.76.
"We competed at a very strong level after riding a bus for five hours and stepping up and racing," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "Ashley Bengtson had an outstanding swim in the 500 free. It's the first time she has swam that here and she's just a few seconds off her lifetime-best. Emily Haan won the 100 fly, one of the first times she's won in college in something that's not backstroke."
