AMES, Iowa. – The Big 12 Conference named Michelle Schlossmacher Smith conference diver of the week and Ashley Bengtson swimmer of the week for their outings against Nebraska. This is Schlossmacher Smith's second time notching the honor in her career and a first for Bengtson.
Schlossmacher Smith dove to a score of 292.45 on the three-meter and 267.00 on the one-meter against Nebraska, both Zone-qualifying marks. Schlossmacher Smith's performance on the three-meter also solidified a team season best. The senior from Roseville, Minn. has totaled a Zone cut in all three duals she has competed in on the three-meter and two on the one-meter this season.
Schlossmacher Smith is an all-time top performer in all diving events; No. 2 on three meter, No. 6 on one meter and No. 6 on platform. The diver is also a three-time All-Big 12 honoree.
In the Nebraska dual, Bengtson swam to first in the 200 free with 1:52.15 and third in the 100 free with 52.31, both team season bests. The sophomore out of Normal, Ill. missed out on first in the 100 free by .21 seconds. This season, Bengtson has tallied five individual event titles and has finished all races in the top three.
Last season, Bengtson claimed Big 12 Newcomer of the Week status in the award's inaugural year. The swimmer currently ranks 10th all-time in the 200 free and tied for 20th-fastest in the 100 free.
Schlossmacher Smith and Bengtson return to the pool this Friday at Beyer Pool for a matchup against Omaha beginning at 4 p.m.
