AMES, Iowa – Iowa State swept the Big 12 Conference weekly awards as Michelle Schlossmacher Smith, Lucia Rizzo and Carley Caughron each tallied an honor for their outings against Iowa. The Cyclones have now picked up five Big 12 awards on the season.
Schlossmacher Smith garnered her third career Big 12 Diver of the Week accolade. The senior out of Roseville, Minn. dove to third with 304.70 on the three-meter, her seventh Zone cut of the season and fifth in the event. Over 80 percent of Schlossmacher Smith's three-meter performances have now produced a Zone cut this season.
Rizzo secured Big 12 Swimmer of the Week status for the second time of her career. Against Iowa, the senior from Woodbury, Minn. clocked a new 100 fly PR of 55.28, knocking down her previous PR of 55.48 set against Iowa two seasons ago. Rizzo notched another win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.47. With her finishes, Rizzo moves up three spots to the 10th-best 100 fly performer and adds the 18th-fastest 200 IM time to the books. Adding 22 points throughout the dual, Rizzo currently holds a career dual point average of 14.14, good for the fifth-highest all-time.
Caughron tallied her second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award of the season. The freshman contributed to two winning relay teams in the Iowa dual, the 200 medley and 400 free relay. The Waterloo, Iowa native also touched second in the 50 free with 23.86 and swam in exhibition in the 100 fly with 57.62.
The swimmers and divers return to competition Jan. 14 and 15 against TCU. Iowa State hosts as the Cyclones take on their first Big 12 dual of the season.
