AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-1 Big 12) kicked off the 2021 Big 12 Championship Wednesday. The Cyclones raced in the 200 medley and 800 free relay to end day one tied for third with 60 points.
Emily Haan, Paige Hanley, Wyli Erlechman and Martha Haas fired first for the Cyclones to touch fourth overall with a season-best 200 medley relay time of 1:41.07. The time also marks the eighth-best all-time Iowa State performance.
Day one capped off with the 800 free relay. The team of Lucia Rizzo, Brinley Horras, Kennedy Tranel and Ashley Bengtson combined for a time of 7:20.99, the seventh-best in program history.
"Excited to be at the Big 12 Championship," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "This is the first time in a year our women have got to compete in our fast suits. It was nice to see how they performed and real happy with their relay performances."
Day two begins with the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free prelims at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Finals are slated to start at 6 p.m. and will conclude with the 400 medley relay. Finals will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
