AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-1 Big 12) ends day two tied for fourth with 143 points. Lucia Rizzo shattered a six-year-old school record while eight swimmers swam in scoring finals on the day.
Rizzo became the newest school-record holder as she also took possession of the bronze medal in the 200 IM with her dominating time of 2:00.13. Rizzo paced with Kansas and Texas to break Kasey Roberts' record of 2:00.29 set in the 2014-15 season. Rizzo becomes the 12th Iowa State swimmer to break the record.
"It was really fun to get up and race," Rizzo said. "This year I've spent a lot of time just focusing on having fun and racing the people around me, not focusing on the time or the place."
The 200 IM all-time performers list saw two new additions while Trinity Gilbert improved to No. 6 as she raced to first in the 'B' heat and grabbed ninth overall with 2:02.82. Emily Heymans enters the list at No. 19 as she placed 14th with 2:04.54 while Alaina Breitbach slides into No. 20 with 2:04.77. Lehr Thorson solidified 16th with her time of 2:06.43 in the 'B' finals.
Brinley Horras secured her second all-time top time on the day in the 500 free 'A' finals as she posted 4:53.08 to place her seventh overall. Horras is the lone current Iowa State swimmer to hold a top time in the event.
In the 500 free 'B' finals, Sydney Jackson improved her prelims time by 1.07 seconds to place 13th with 4:56.93. Jackson made the move from No. 18 to No. 17 on the all-time list with the time. Kennedy Tranel posted a PR time in the 'C' finals with 5:02.46, good for 19th place.
Andie Quirke touched the wall in the 50 free 'B' finals with 23.63 for 13th. Sophia Goushchina timed in behind Quirke with 23.73 for 14th. Martha Haas rounded out the heat with her time of 23.90 to secure 16th for the Cyclones.
Rizzo continued lighting up the pool after posting the school record as she swam the third leg of the 400 medley relay. The team of Emily Haan, Thorson, Rizzo and Haas finished fourth with 3:42.82, the sixth-best performance in school history.
PRELIMS
In the 500 free, Horras touched first in her heat and went on to place third overall behind two Texas swimmers with a time of 4:50.86. Jackson made 'B' finals as she swam to 4:58.00 to place her 13th and enter the all-time performers list.
Rizzo led the way in the 200 IM to post an 'A' final qualifying time of 2:01.22. Placing fourth overall, Rizzo moved up the Iowa State rankings from the 10th spot to the fourth while snagging a top-10 Iowa State all-time time. The trio of Trinity Gilbert (2:04.97, 10th), Emily Heymans (2:05.47, 13th) and Lehr Thorson (2:05.82, 14th) all placed into 'B' finals.

"Very happy with our performances this morning and afternoon," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "Highlighted by Brinley making the big heat in the 500 free and getting her best time by three seconds and Lucia Rizzo setting the school record and getting third place. It was really all the IMers, they did a great job and a bunch of them moved onto the top-20 list."
Day three events include the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 200 free relay. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Finals will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
