LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) trails Kansas (2-1, 1-0 Big 12) by a score of 106-44. Diver Jayna Misra cemented the lone Cyclone title of the night while Iowa State went on to grab a number of third-place finishes.
Misra dove to a one-meter score of 282.52 to take her second season victory. The current Big 12 Diver of the Week now holds five Zone-qualifying scores while her performance tonight came just under the one-meter 'B' cut of 283.00.
Michelle Schlossmacher Smith came in second on the one-meter with 261.90, while freshman Joscelyn Buss finished fourth with 239.39.
The two-day dual began with the 200 medley relay with the Cyclones finishing third. Wyli Erlechman, Martha Haas, Emily Haan and Andie Quirke combined with a time of 1:45.31, the second-fastest time of the season.
Freshman performed solidly as they had the fastest Cyclone times in the next two events. Sydney Jackson solidified third with her time of 10:30.29 in the 1000 free while Ashley Bengtson also swam to a third-place finish with 1:53.15 in the 200 free.
In the next event, Emily Haan came in third with her 100 back time of 58.28. Elizabeth Richardson (59.35) and Jazlyn Horras (59.46) both clocked in in under a minute to secure fifth and sixth.
Lehr Thorson took third in the 100 breast with 1:03.54. Martha Haas (1:05.31) and Paige Hanley (1:05.32) had a close finish as they grabbed fourth and fifth.
Lucia Rizzo solidified another third-place finish in the 200 fly. The current Big 12 Swimmer of the Week timed in at 2:04.23, 1.24 seconds behind first.
Day one closed out with the 50 free. Emma Sass (24.79), Andie Quirke (24.84) and Trinity Sadecky (25.53) touched one after another to take fourth through sixth.
Competition will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Events include the 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 500 free, 100 fly, three-meter diving, 200 IM and the 400 free relay.
