AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-1 Big 12) concludes the fifth day of the Big 12 Championship in third with 476 points. Divers took over the competition as Michelle Schlossmacher Smith moved on to the three-meter championship finals.
Schlossmacher Smith pinned down a 49.20 on her first dive, going on to claim an overall score of 273.65. The score came just under the 280 mark and securing her sixth three-meter Zone qualifying score on the season.
In prelims, Schlossmacher Smith recorded her 10th season Zone cut as she scored 288.90 to place sixth. The junior moved onto finals with the finish.
Freshman Joscelyn Buss posted a 246.25, 6.2 off her PR, to finish 13th in prelims and notch a consolation finals slot.
Buss went on to claim fifth in consolation finals and 14th overall with 244.10. Jessica Coffin grabbed 16th overall with a score of 196.15, besting her prelims score by over 10.
"It was great to have all three divers scoring points for the team today," said diving coach Jeff Warrick. "Joscelyn had a very good showing for her first time at the Big 12 Championships, and I was very excited that Michelle advanced to the top-eight finals. Last year she did not get in so this was a big step forward for her, and I was very proud of her."
The Big 12 Championship continues tomorrow with one-meter diving.
