FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Iowa State's Jason Gomez battled to fifth place and First Team All-America honors in a physical 800-meter run at the 2021 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at the Tyson Track Center.
Gomez scored four points for Iowa State and, combined with NCAA 5K champion Wesley Kiptoo's 10 yesterday, put the Cyclones in 13th place in the final team standings.
Gomez went wire-to-wire in yesterday's prelim, but the field was more up to the challenge today, which saw the Cyclone shuffled back to sixth after one lap. He got where he wanted to go on the second lap, the front and the inside rail, and he held that when the bell rang with 200 meters to go.
It was hard work, though, as Gomez went through 400 in 52.62 and 600 in 1:19.20. Texas Tech's Takieddine Hedeilli went to the outside in the turn and his efforts to get ahead slowed the Cyclone sophomore down, allowing eventual top-2 Charlie Hunter of Oregon and Finley McLear of Miami (OH) to pass to battle for the win. Gomez was unable to get his momentum back, as he eventually crossed the line in fifth in 1:48.06.
Gomez earned First Team All-America honors, his first of his Iowa State career, and adding to the Cyclones' most decorated event in program history, with ISU having earned All-America honors indoors 14 times, six having come in Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Martin Smith's tenure.
