Next Up
Friday night marks the most pivotal round of wrestling at the NCAA Championships; the semifinals and blood round. Session V will begin at 7 p.m. this evening and will be broadcast on ESPN.
Session III (Quarterfinals/Consolations)
Carr earned All-America honors behind a 4-2 win in sudden victory over Minnesota's Brayton Lee. Carr led 1-0 heading to the third period on an escape in the second period. Carr rode Lee for most of the third period, but Lee reversed Carr in the closing moments of regulation. Carr's 1:31 of riding time tied the match, sending them to sudden victory at 2-2.
In the extra period, Carr got to a low single attack and finished to advance to the semifinals. He'll face NC State's Hayden Hidlay with a shot in the NCAA finals on the line.
In the 141-pound consolation bracket, Ian Parker fell to Nebraska's Chad Red by 11-8 decision. Parker trailed 6-0 in the first, but battled back. Parker scored seven of his eight points in the second and third periods, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback against the Husker.
Parker finishes his Iowa State career as an All-American, Big 12 champion and three-time NCAA Qualifier.
Session IV (Quarterfinals/Consolations)
In the 285-pound quarterfinals, Gremmel faced Wisconsin's Trent Hillger. After the two heavyweights traded escapes in the second and third periods, they went to overtime tied at 1-1. A winner couldn't be determined in SV1, so it was on to tiebreakers. In the first part of TB1, Gremmel took a 2-1 lead on an escape. In the latter half, Gremmel rode Hillger out to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Tonight Gremmel will take on Michigan's Mason Parris in the 285-pound semifinals.
Marcus Coleman picked up his fifth postseason pin in the second round of consolation matches. Leading 6-3, Coleman turned UVA's Jay Aiello to his back and pinned the Cavalier in 5:37. In his next match, Coleman was eliminated, dropping a tight 3-2 decision to Purdue's Thomas Penola.
At 184 pounds, Sam Colbray got the Cyclones rolling in session IV, taking care of Campbell's Caleb Hopkins. Colbray used a reversal, two takedowns and 1:31 of riding time to advance over his Camel opponent. In the ensuing round, Colbray dropped a 9-4 decision to Oklahoma State's Dakota Geer and was eliminated from the tournament.
Colbray wraps up his Iowa State career as an All-American and three-time NCAA Qualifier.
