DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams had a strong day at the Blue Oval Open, racking up nine victories on Saturday at Drake Stadium. The Cyclones impressed across a number of events.
Four different Cyclone women's throwers swept the four throwing events competed on Saturday. The highlight performance came from Emily March in the discus, with the sophomore taking the win by over 17 feet, with her best throw being her fourth of the day at 162-8 (49.59m) for the win. March's effort is good for fifth in ISU history.
In the javelin, Bailey Righi also notched a personal best en route to victory, with her third throw of 146-2 (44.56m) being an over four-foot improvement from her previous best of 141-11 at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championships. In the other throws events, Antonella Creazzola won the hammer throw (176-8, 53.84m) and Keiara Williams took the shot put (47-11, 14.60m).
On the track, a couple of men's middle distance competitors impressed. In the 400-meter dash, Cebastian Gentil, the Cyclones' 400m leg on its past two indoor All-American DMR teams, took the win with a personal best 47.88. Doubling the distance, David Thompson picked up a victory in the 800-meter run, clocking an outdoor PR of 1:54.59.
Other Cyclone winners on the day included the men's 4x400m relay of Gage Clay, Joven Nelson, Charlie Johnson and Thompson, Kevin Sakson in the men's discus and Megan Durbin in the women's high jump.
