AMES, Iowa – The postseason is here and the Iowa State women's golf team is ready to compete at the 2021 Big 12 Championship, April 18-20 at the Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.
Iowa State, ranked No. 37 nationally by Golfstat, is one of seven teams in the league rated in the top-50 competing for the conference title. ISU's best showing at the Big 12 Championship was a runner-up finish in 2017.
Texas is the three-time defending champion, winning titles in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
This year's tournament is held at the Club at Carlton Woods (Tom Fazio Championship Course). Making its debut in 2005, the impressive Fazio design was voted as the No. 3 Best New Private Course in the U.S. in 2005. The layout has played host to numerous prestigious amateur events, including the U.S. Junior Amateur in 2014.
Iowa State is a virtual lock to make its 11th-straight NCAA Regional berth, as the Cyclones have made NCAA postseason every year since 2010.
Losing out its opportunity to compete in 2020, Iowa State head coach Christie Martens feels blessed her team will see the postseason this time around.
"Our team is really resilient and I think they've done a great job of following the protocols," Martens said. "We haven't had any pauses in our season, no contract tracing, no positives. We are lucky because golf is a "distanced" sport, so there's really been a resurgence of golf for everyone around the nation this year which has really been good for our sport and for our team this year."
The Cyclones have been solid in the spring while playing in competitive tournaments against the nation's best. Their top two performances of the year were at the LTWF Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate and Mountain View Collegiate, placing fourth at both events.
"Our team has been playing really well and I think we're peaking at the right time," Martens added. "It's been really exciting to see the gains that we've made individually, which adds up as a team collectively."
It wasn't a secret the Cyclones received a boost in the spring with the return of Liyana Durisic and the addition of Charley Jacobs. The duo sat out the fall campaign and rejoined the team for the spring season.
Durisic, a freshman, who is in her second season on the squad, has been a model of consistency for the Cyclones. Ranked No. 84 nationally by Golfstat, Durisic has placed in the top-20 in five of six events this spring, including a top-10 (T9th) at the Mountain View Collegiate. She leads the team in stroke average at 73.16.
Getting Durisic back in the lineup has been key to ISU's success.
"Liyana has a phenomenal mind-set for the game," Martens said. "She's a great learner, academically and a student of the game. You see it in practice. When she's working on something you can really see the lights go on. She's done a great job with course management and trying to hit great targets. She's very smart and very resilient."
Jacobs, a first-year freshman who hails from Adelaide, Australia, is fourth on the team in stroke average at 74.33. She showed a glimpse of greatness at the LTWF Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate by tying for seventh with a pair of rounds in the 60s, including a 65 in the second round, the lowest score by a rookie in school history.
Sophomore Taglao Jeeravivitaporn is second on the team in scoring average (73.85) and is fresh off a top-10 performance at the Silverado Showdown, tying for eighth with a three-round 218 total.
Amelia Grohn, a fifth-year senior, is the seasoned veteran of the group. She will break ISU's career rounds played record this weekend (she currently at 135 career rounds) and is third on the team in stroke average at 74.29.
Grohn's leadership has been valuable to the team.
"Amelia is a phenomenal leader, on and off the golf course," Martens said. "You can see she cares so much about her teammates and how they can be better. She does the right things, and she wants to be a leader. She wants to see the best in others."
