WACO, Texas – The 38th-ranked Iowa State tennis team made history Friday at the Big 12 Championships with a 4-1 win against No. 29 Texas Tech, the first win in school history at the tournament and the first in any conference tournament since 1994.
The Cyclones (13-6) became the first six seed in the current tournament format to defeat a three seed by taking down the Lady Raiders (15-8).
Entering the season, ISU had not defeated Texas Tech in 28 previous meetings. On Friday, the Cyclones beat the Lady Raiders for the second time in head coach Boomer Saia's third season at the helm.
It was a gritty performance as Saia and assistant coach Kenna Kilgo flipped their lineup and the squad responded.
Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh, playing together for the first time this season, defeated the nation's No. 47-ranked pairing of Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas, also playing together for the first time, clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Margarita Skriabina and Olivia Peet at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Maty Cancini then gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead with a historic win of her own. Cancini dominated in cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Staines, the nation's 108th-ranked player. The win cemented Cancini's place in the record books as the Venezuelan became the school's career wins leader with 160 career victories.
Cabezas then took care of business at No. 5 singles, improving to 12-2 this season and 4-0 at the fifth slot, with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Peet.
Texas Tech earned its only point at No. 6 singles to close the ISU lead to 3-1.
ISU led by a set at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 with the second set in each match tight.
Chie Kezuka faced a 3-0 deficit in her second set and rallied to tie it up at 5-5. The second-year freshman remained steady and eventually came out on top with the 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win at No 4 singles to set off the Cyclone celebration.
In topping the 28th-ranked Lady Raiders, ISU improved to 4-4 against ranked opponents. The four wins are the only four top-50 victories in school history.
Iowa State will face No. 2 seed Baylor on Saturday at noon.
