EUGENE, Oregon – Iowa State put up another collection of impressive performances across its competitions at the Hayward Premiere and the Florida Relays. The highlight of ISU's Saturday came at Hayward Field as Festus Lagat and Roshon Roomes moved into the NCAA Division I Top 10 for the 800 meter run with their performances.
Iowa State's indoor All-American at 800 meters, Jason Gomez, took on pacing duties for the day and led the field through the first 500 meters, leaving Lagat and Roomes at the front. It would be an ISU-Oregon battle with the Cyclone duo taking on Oregon's Cole Hocker and Luis Peralta. Hocker held the inside line and was able to sprint home for the win, with Lagat taking second in 1:47.15 (No.3 in NCAA Division I during the 20201 outdoor season, Roomes crossed fourth in 1:47.87 (No. 8 in NCAA Division I this season).
ISU showed its depth at 800 meters in the open divisions, with five Cyclones all going sub-1:52, four of whom clocked personal bests on Saturday.
Eric Fogltanz led the Cyclone contingent at the Florida Relays with a strong performance in the 400-meter dash. Running his first competitive 400-meter dash as a Cyclone outdoors, Fogltanz showed his stuff by winning the second heat and taking sixth overall in 46.84, a mark that is good for No. 9 in ISU outdoor history.
Despite being down two of its top women's sprinters in Tatiana Aholou and Katarina Vlahovic, the ISU women still put up a very strong 4x100-meter relay, as the quartet of Zakiyah Amos, Bria Barnes, Erika Furbeck and Kaylyn Hall finished eighth with a time of 46.01. The time is good for eighth in ISU history, and was the fastest ISU 4x1 since 2010. Amos came back later in the day to run a personal-best 55.06 in the 400-meter dash.
The Cyclones continued to see encouraging signs in the men's discus, with a duo of young throwers putting up strong performances. Kevin Sakson led the way, with the Estonian finishing eighth with a season-best 169-1 (51.54m), while Jonathan Gannon was the best competitor in flight one with his season-best mark of 155-1 (47.28m).
