AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Wesley Kiptoo has been named the Big 12's Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week after his outstanding 10K performance at the Hayward Premiere last weekend. This is the first time Kiptoo has been named Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week and his third across all sports to go with his two cross country weekly awards in the fall.
Kiptoo and Cyclone teammate Edwin Kurgat dominated the 10,000-meter run on the opening night of the new Hayward Field last Friday. Kiptoo was part of a three-man lead pack after the pacer departed at 4,000 meters, which then came down to the two Cyclones by 4,800 meters to fight out the victory. Kiptoo was able to successfully navigate some last-lap lapped traffic to bring home the win in 27:58.10, closely followed by Kurgat's 27:58.33. The duo ran the nation's top-two marks in the 10,000 meters during this outdoor season.
Kiptoo's performance was one of many over the weekend that helped the Iowa State men climb to No. 8 in this week's USTFCCCA Outdoor National Rating Index, ISU's highest regular season outdoor ranking in school history.
The Cyclones split for a pair of meets this weekend, running at the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake on Friday and the Joe Walker Invitational hosted by Ole Miss on Friday and Saturday.
